Alta Head's Obituary
Alta Head, age 86, of Centerville, Iowa, died Tuesday, December 2, 2014, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. She was born the daughter of Carl and Edythe (Burness) Phillips on November 2, 1928 in Centerville, Iowa. She graduated from the Udell, Iowa High School. In 1957, Alta was united in marriage to Earl Head.As a teenager, she showed calves at the county fair. Continuing to share her love of the land and animals, she raised and showed sheep with her son for several years, most of all, she loved her cows. Her life was dedicated to keeping the family farm going. She also worked for a time at the local telephone company. After they moved operation out of town, she became a waitress at the Blue Bird Caf and the Stateway Caf both in Centerville, for about 15 years. Her beloved and constant companion was a bird, named 'Tweety' it gave her so much joy. She looked forward to the conversation that was shared with her many friends at Hardees and McDonald's every evening.She was preceded in death by: her parents; and her husband, Earl Head in 1998.Alta is survived by: her daughter, Debbie Shannon of Clearwater, Florida and her son, Bill and his wife, Charlotte Head of Centerville; grandsons, Nathan and Jacob Head of Centerville, and a very loyal friend, Doyle Clinkenbeard also of Centerville.Graveside services will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 10 am at the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 5, 2014 from 2 pm until 8 pm at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville with the family present from 6 pm until 8 pm.Memorials can be made to the Appanoose County Fair and left or mailed to the funeral home.
