Alfreda J. Simmons' Obituary
Alfreda J. Simmons, age 87, of Centerville, Iowa, died Saturday, July 25, 2015, at Centerville Nursing & Rehab Center in Centerville. She was born in Darby, Iowa, January 14, 1928 the daughter of George and Carrie (Benson) Simmons. She attended grade school in Darby, graduated from Centerville High School and the Hinsdale Sanitarium and Hospital School of Nursing and was a licensed practical nurse. She spent her entire nursing career at the Hinsdale Sanitarium and Hospital in Hinsdale, Illinois. After retirement she moved back to Iowa, built a house on the original Simmons property in Darby and lived there until 2012 when she moved to the Continental at St Joseph's Assisted Living and ultimately the memory care unit. She spent the last weeks of her life at Centerville Nursing and Rehab Center.After retirement Alfreda did volunteer work assisting the county nurse, worked at the Lord's Cupboard and delivered Meals on Wheels. She was an active life-long member of the Centerville Seventh Day Adventist Church. Her brother Royal Simmons deserves special recognition for the frequent care and attention he provided her in her declining years.Alfreda was preceded in death by her parents, George and Carrie Simmons; sisters, Ruth Van den Brink, Esther Ray, Edith Johnson, Madge Peterson; brothers, George, Chester, Ray and Paul Simmons.She is survived by: her twin brother, Alfred Simmons of Harrison, Arkansas, brother, Royal Simmons of Centerville, Iowa; and sister, Dr. Virginia Simmons of Lubbock, Texas.Funeral services will be held at 10 am, Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa with the Clergy of the Centerville Seventh Day Adventist Church officiating. Burial will follow at the Haines Cemetery north of Centerville. Visitation will be held from 2 pm until 8 pm on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at the funeral home with the family present from 6 pm until 8 pm.Memorials can be made to the Centerville Seventh Day Adventist Church and left or mailed to the funeral home.
